Early in the morning, just before she went to work, I was talking about the news with my youngest daughter, Jeske, at breakfast. Leading topic: a license was issued for the shooting of 1800 so called “large grazers” in the Oostvaardersplassen. In this area, red deer, horses and other large ungulates had been released at the time. Without predators, everyone can simply guess how that ends; the people of nature protection apparently couldn’t. In recent years, the number of ungulates in the limited area has increased explosively, resulting in an ecological disaster scenario that many people, particularly in winter, when many animals died from food shortage, could not bear. The solution to prevent a repetition of the dramatic scenes with concerned animal activists along the gates of the nature reserve: to shoot the surplus of ungulates. Consequence: new discussions about the necessity of this action. The discussion (and the action) knows no winners anyway, but only losers.
Something completely different was the publication of Jeske’s collection of short Christmas stories. Ten stories based on popular Christmas songs. One story has yet to be written. A story that will be based on her favorite song, “Cold December Night” by Michael Bubblé.
Well. Before she jumped on her bike to go to work, my sick mind had already made the combination. A horror Christmas story in which the surplus of people... Anyway. Read the story. Christmas will never be the same again!
